Damp walls and stained ceilings are among the most common complaints in Pakistani homes. Fresh paint bubbles and peels within months, white salt crystals appear on lower walls, plaster turns soft and powdery, and brown rings spread across the ceiling after every rain. Rooms develop a musty smell, wardrobes and wooden furniture grow mould, and family members with asthma or allergies feel the difference. Many households respond by repainting each year, but paint cannot stop moisture that is coming from inside the wall or from above the ceiling. Until the source is treated, the damage returns, usually worse than before.
Wellcool offers professional wall and ceiling waterproofing in Pakistan that starts with finding where the moisture is coming from. It may be rising damp from the foundation, monsoon rain driving through an exterior wall, a leaking bathroom on the other side, a concealed pipe, or a roof or terrace above. Each cause needs a different treatment. Once we identify it, we stop the water at the source, remove damaged plaster, apply suitable waterproofing and breathable finishes, and restore the wall or ceiling so it stays dry season after season.
Rising damp is very common in older houses and in low-lying areas of Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan and Peshawar. Groundwater is drawn up through brick walls by capillary action when the damp-proof course (DPC) at plinth level is missing, damaged or bridged by raised floors or soil. It shows as a tide mark up to two or three feet high, with salts and crumbling plaster below it.
Rain penetration affects exterior walls, especially those facing the direction of monsoon winds. Water enters through cracks in plaster, gaps around windows, open joints in brickwork, damaged chajjas and parapets. Plumbing and bathroom leaks cause damp patches on walls next to washrooms and kitchens, often from failed tile grout, shower areas or concealed pipes. Ceiling stains usually come from the roof, terrace, bathroom or water tank above. Finally, condensation in poorly ventilated kitchens, bathrooms and basements can produce damp and mould that is sometimes mistaken for seepage. Correct diagnosis saves money because it targets the real problem.
Look out for these common symptoms:
When moisture comes from outside, the most effective treatment is usually on the exterior face. We repair cracks, seal window and door perimeters, fix chajjas and parapet tops, and apply a breathable water-repellent or elastomeric coating that stops rain from entering while allowing the wall to dry out. This protects both the wall and the interior finish.
When the exterior is not accessible, for example on shared walls or walls against a neighbour, or when the moisture comes from the ground, we treat from the interior face. Damaged plaster is removed to a level above the damp line, salts are cleaned, and a waterproof render or cementitious coating is applied before replastering with a salt-resistant mix and finishing with breathable paint. For rising damp we can also install a chemical damp-proof course by injecting a water-repellent cream or liquid into the masonry at low level, creating a new barrier against upward moisture movement.

For rising damp, holes are drilled at regular spacing along the base of the wall and filled with a silane or siloxane based damp-proofing cream or liquid. It spreads through the masonry and forms a water-repellent band that blocks capillary rise. Salt-contaminated plaster above is then removed and replaced with a suitable render.
After removing damp, salt-laden plaster, we apply a waterproofing slurry or polymer-modified render to the masonry, then replaster with a mix designed to resist salts. This prevents salts from migrating into the new finish and causing the same blistering again.
Exterior walls are treated with a breathable silicone or siloxane water repellent, or with a flexible elastomeric coating that bridges hairline cracks. These keep monsoon rain out while allowing water vapour to escape from inside the wall, which is essential for a lasting dry wall.
Cracks in plaster are opened and filled with flexible fillers or repair mortar. Gaps around windows, AC units, pipes and electrical boxes are sealed with suitable sealants. Chajja tops and parapet copings are sloped and waterproofed so water drains off instead of soaking into the wall.
Ceiling stains are only fixed permanently after the roof, terrace, bathroom or tank above has been treated. Once the source is dry, we remove loose and stained plaster, treat any exposed rusting reinforcement with anti-corrosion primer, repair with polymer mortar, apply a stain-blocking primer and repaint.
Where mould has developed, surfaces are cleaned with a fungicidal wash and finished with a mould-resistant primer and paint. Ventilation advice is given so condensation does not bring the mould back.
Mapping damp areas and identifying the source

DPC injection, slurry or crack repair as needed
Salt-resistant render and breathable finishes
Stain-blocking primer and suitable paint
Many homeowners in Pakistan repaint damp walls every year or two, often using so-called waterproof paints or putty. The problem is that moisture inside the wall keeps carrying salts to the surface. When paint blocks this moisture, it pushes the film off, causing bubbles and peeling. Thick layers of putty on damp walls absorb moisture and crumble. Even the best paint cannot stop water coming from the ground, a leaking pipe or a roof. Real waterproofing treats the wall itself and the source of the water, so that the final paint coat is applied to a dry, sound surface and lasts much longer.

Persistent damp creates conditions for mould and dust mites, which can aggravate asthma, allergies and respiratory problems, particularly in children and elderly family members. Damp rooms also feel colder in winter and more humid in summer. Treating damp walls and ceilings is therefore not just about appearance; it improves comfort and indoor air quality. Combined with good ventilation, such as exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, waterproofing helps keep living spaces healthier.
In many older neighbourhoods of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Peshawar, streets have been raised several times over the years. As a result, the ground outside a house may now be higher than its original damp-proof course, letting moisture bypass the barrier and climb into the walls. The same happens when soil or flower beds are piled against walls or when internal floors are raised during renovation. In such cases we may recommend lowering soil next to the wall, adding drainage, and installing a new chemical DPC at the correct level along with internal treatment.
Walls facing the prevailing monsoon winds receive the heaviest driving rain. Plaster with fine shrinkage cracks, unsealed window frames and open joints in exposed brick soak up water quickly. On high-rise apartments and plazas, wind pressure pushes rain further into the wall. A breathable repellent coating, combined with crack repair and window sealing, is often the most effective solution for these walls and keeps exterior paint looking fresh for longer.
Damp walls and ceilings often come from elsewhere in the building. See roof waterproofing, bathroom and washroom waterproofing, terrace and balcony waterproofing, leakage and seepage treatment and dampness and seepage solutions. For exterior protection read about exterior wall protection, and for finishes see interior wall painting.
A damp patch that appears on a bedroom or lounge wall directly behind a bathroom is one of the most frequent problems we see. Water from the shower area soaks through failed tile grout and the wall behind, or a concealed hot or cold water pipe develops a slow leak at a joint. Kitchens behave similarly, especially around sinks and dishwasher connections. Treating the damp wall alone will not help, because water will keep arriving from the wet side. We check the bathroom or kitchen first, pressure-test concealed lines where needed, and coordinate the waterproofing of the wet area with the repair of the affected wall, so both sides are fixed properly.
Top-floor ceilings under flat RCC roofs face two problems in Pakistan: water leaking through the roof during the monsoon, and extreme heat in summer that causes the slab to expand and crack. Repeated wetting and drying leaves ceilings with brown rings, hairline cracks and patches of loose plaster. In older houses, rust stains may appear where water has reached the steel reinforcement, and pieces of concrete can fall off as the steel expands. We assess the ceiling and the roof together, treat exposed steel, rebuild damaged concrete with polymer repair mortar and recommend roof waterproofing, often combined with heatproofing, so that the ceiling stays sound.
The final paint matters. Walls that have been treated for damp should be finished with breathable emulsions rather than heavy oil-based enamels that trap moisture. Stain-blocking primers prevent old watermarks from bleeding through new paint on ceilings. In bathrooms and kitchens, mould-resistant paints are worth using. We advise on suitable finishes so your treated walls look good and stay that way.

Peeling usually means moisture is moving through the wall and pushing the paint off, often carrying salts with it. The moisture may come from rising damp, rain, plumbing or a roof above. Repainting does not stop it. The source must be treated and damaged plaster replaced before painting.
Rising damp is groundwater drawn up through brick walls by capillary action when the damp-proof course is missing, damaged or bridged. It typically produces a damp band up to two or three feet above floor level with salts and crumbling plaster. It is treated with a chemical damp-proof course and salt-resistant replastering.
Not permanently. The stain is a symptom of water coming from above, such as the roof, terrace, bathroom or tank. If only the ceiling is repainted, the stain returns with the next leak. We first treat the source, allow the ceiling to dry, then repair and repaint it.
Quality exterior coatings help, but they work best with crack repair, window sealing and proper parapet and chajja detailing. Breathable repellents or elastomeric coatings are preferred because they keep rain out without trapping moisture inside the wall.
Drying time depends on wall thickness, how wet it was and the season. After treatment, walls are left to dry until moisture levels are acceptable for the chosen finish. Painting too early is a common reason for repeat failure, so we advise on timing.
Yes. We clean mould with a fungicidal wash, fix the moisture source and finish with mould-resistant primer and paint. Improving ventilation is also important where condensation contributes to mould.
