Swimming pools have become a popular feature of farmhouses around Lahore and Islamabad, large homes in DHA and Bahria Town, hotels, sports clubs, gyms and private schools. With summer temperatures reaching 45–50°C, a pool is a real relief for families. But a pool is also a large concrete container holding many tons of water under constant pressure, treated with chlorine and exposed to strong sun. If it is not waterproofed correctly, water escapes through the shell, joints and fittings. Owners notice the level dropping faster than evaporation alone can explain, tiles loosening, green or white stains on walls and wet soil or damp basements near the pool. Over time, leaking water can wash away soil beneath the pool and corrode reinforcement.
Wellcool provides complete swimming pool waterproofing in Pakistan for new pools and for existing pools that are losing water. We determine whether loss is due to evaporation, plumbing or the structure, then treat the shell, construction joints, skimmers, inlets, lights and main drain with systems rated for permanent immersion. For new pools, we work before tiling so that the waterproofing sits safely under the finish where it belongs.
A pool shell is usually built in reinforced concrete, sometimes with block walls in smaller residential pools. Concrete alone is not fully waterproof, and the many openings needed for a pool — skimmers, return inlets, main drains, underwater lights, overflow channels and steps — create weak points. Construction joints between the floor and walls, or between different pours, are classic leak paths if no waterstop was used. Cracks can also develop from shrinkage, settlement of poorly compacted soil, or the stress of filling and emptying the pool.
Pakistan’s climate adds its own pressures. Pools that are emptied in winter and left dry in hot sun may crack as the shell heats and contracts. Pools built in areas with a high water table, such as parts of Lahore and riverside farmhouses, face groundwater pressure from outside when empty. Chlorine and other pool chemicals slowly attack cement-based grout and plaster that are not designed for them. Finally, tiles fixed with ordinary cement mortar, without a membrane behind them, may look perfect on the surface while water travels freely through the joints into the concrete.
These are common indications that a pool is leaking:
In Pakistani summers, evaporation alone can lower a pool noticeably, especially in hot, dry and windy weather. A simple way to check is the bucket test: place a bucket filled with pool water on a step inside the pool so both water levels are the same, mark both levels, and compare after a day with the pump off. If the pool level falls clearly more than the bucket level, the pool is leaking. Repeating the test with the pump running helps indicate whether the leak is in the pressure-side plumbing. During our inspection, we combine this with a visual check of fittings, joints and the shell to locate the source.
Separate evaporation, plumbing and shell leaks
Systems suited to constant water and pool chemicals
Skimmers, lights, inlets and drains sealed properly
Coordination with pool plumbers and tile fixers
Crystalline slurry applied to the prepared concrete shell reacts with moisture to form crystals inside pores and hairline cracks, making the concrete itself more watertight. It works under pressure from both sides, which is helpful in pools that are sometimes emptied in areas with groundwater.
A two-component flexible cementitious membrane, rated for immersion, is applied over the shell in at least two coats, with reinforcing fabric at wall-floor junctions, corners, steps and joints. Tiles are then fixed with a suitable adhesive and grouted with a chemical-resistant or epoxy grout. This combination keeps water out of the concrete even if a grout line wears.
Leaking construction joints and active cracks are injected with polyurethane or epoxy resin depending on whether movement is expected. Once sealed, they are bridged with reinforced membrane so they do not reopen when the pool is filled.
Skimmers, return inlets, main drains, lights and overflow outlets are among the most common leak points. We remove loose mortar around each fitting, rebuild with non-shrink waterproof mortar, and use flexible sealant and membrane collars so the joint between plastic or metal fittings and concrete stays watertight.
The joint between the pool coping and the surrounding deck must allow movement while keeping water out. We install suitable joint sealants and waterproof the deck so splash water and rain run away from the pool shell instead of into the soil around it.
Pools with infinity edges or overflow gutters have balance tanks that also need waterproofing. We treat these tanks and the channels feeding them, which are often overlooked and can lose significant amounts of water.
Level tests and checks of shell, joints and fittings
Pool emptied, cleaned and allowed to dry as needed
Loose tiles and weak plaster removed, surface roughened
Cracks and joints injected; fittings rebuilt
Immersion-grade system applied with reinforcement
Tiling, curing and gradual filling with level monitoring
For a new pool, the best results come from planning waterproofing alongside the structural design. Waterstops in construction joints, good concrete compaction, properly installed puddle flanges around pipes, and a membrane applied before tiling all reduce the risk of future leaks. We can coordinate with your contractor so the shell is prepared and waterproofed at the right stage, with adequate curing before tiles go on.
For an existing pool, the approach depends on the severity of the leak. If loss is localised around a fitting or a single crack, targeted repair may be enough. If tiles are widely hollow, grout has failed throughout and the shell shows multiple cracks, the reliable solution is to remove the tiles, prepare the shell, apply a complete membrane system and re-tile. We explain both options and their trade-offs clearly.

Pool water is treated with chlorine and pH chemicals. When the water is too acidic or chlorine levels are consistently very high, ordinary cement grout and plaster dissolve slowly, leaving joints open and exposing the membrane underneath. This is why we recommend chemical-resistant or epoxy grout in pools and advise owners to keep water chemistry in the recommended range. Good water balance protects both the waterproofing system and the tiles, and keeps the pool comfortable for swimmers.
Many families in Punjab and Islamabad stop using their pools in winter. Leaving a pool completely empty for months can expose the shell to sun, cold and groundwater pressure, which may lead to cracking or, in high water table areas, uplift. In most cases it is better to keep the pool filled and covered, with basic circulation, rather than fully drained. If draining is necessary for repairs, it should be planned and kept as short as possible.
Pools are often near basements and plant rooms, so see basement waterproofing and underground water tank waterproofing. For cracks in the shell or deck, read about crack filling and repair, and for hidden water loss see leakage and seepage treatment. Large properties may also need commercial and industrial waterproofing.
Some hotels, apartment towers and luxury homes in Pakistan now include pools on rooftops or upper floors. Here a leak does not just waste water; it can damage the rooms, offices or parking directly underneath and affect the structure supporting a very heavy load. Rooftop pools need extra care with movement joints, drainage around the pool, and the junction between the pool shell and the surrounding roof waterproofing. They are also exposed to the full intensity of summer sun, which increases thermal movement. We treat these pools with a layered approach and tie the pool waterproofing into the building roof system so that splash water and rain are drained away safely.
Smaller water bodies such as plunge pools, jacuzzis, fountains, ornamental ponds and water features in lawns and lobbies leak for the same reasons as larger pools: porous concrete, unsealed fittings and failed grout. Because they are small, owners often assume a coat of paint will solve the problem. In practice, they need the same immersion-grade waterproofing and careful detailing of pipes, lights and nozzles. We waterproof these features for homes, farmhouses, hotels and commercial lobbies, choosing finishes that suit both appearance and constant water contact.

Use the bucket test. Place a bucket of pool water on a step so the water levels match, mark both and check after 24 hours with the pump off. If the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket, there is a leak. Our inspection then narrows down whether it is plumbing, fittings or the shell.
Localised leaks at fittings, joints or individual cracks can sometimes be repaired without full re-tiling. If tiles are widely hollow or the shell leaks in many places, removing tiles and installing a complete membrane system is the dependable solution. We recommend the approach after inspecting the pool drained.
Pools need systems rated for permanent immersion and resistant to pool chemicals. A combination of crystalline treatment for the concrete and a flexible cementitious membrane under tiles is widely used. Fittings and joints need their own detailing. The exact system depends on whether the pool is new or existing.
For shell waterproofing, yes. The surfaces must be clean, prepared and accessible. We plan drainage, cleaning and curing so the pool is out of use for as short a time as practical, and advise on precautions if your area has a high water table.
Tiles usually fall because water has got behind them through failed grout or cracks, weakening the adhesive or mortar bed. Pool chemicals and temperature changes speed this up. Re-fixing tiles without waterproofing behind them usually leads to the same problem again.
Yes. Balance tanks and overflow channels hold water constantly and are often the hidden source of water loss. We inspect, repair and line these tanks along with the main pool shell.
The cooler, drier months from October to March are usually ideal, since the pool is used less and curing conditions are good. Planning work in this window means the pool is ready for the summer season.
