The surface of a flat roof is the first line of defence for your whole building. In Pakistan, most RCC roofs are finished with a combination of layers: a mud or brick-ballast fill for insulation and slope, a cement-sand screed, and often traditional brick tiles (tile-tharra) laid in mortar. Over years of 45–50°C summers, monsoon storms, dust, water tank overflows and foot traffic, these layers deteriorate. Tiles crack and lose their joints, screed turns powdery and hollow, the mud fill compacts unevenly and low spots form where water stands after every rain. A damaged surface not only leaks; it also cannot hold any waterproofing coating, because coatings need a sound, well-drained base to bond to. The screed is compacted, finished and cured with water for several days, which is essential in Pakistani heat to prevent rapid drying and shrinkage cracks.
Where homeowners prefer the traditional tile finish for its insulating value, sound tiles are reused and broken ones replaced. Tiles are relaid on fresh mortar with proper falls, and joints are filled with a polymer-modified pointing mortar that resists washout. Expansion joints are provided at intervals and sealed with flexible sealant.
Angle fillets at parapets are rebuilt in polymer mortar, drain outlets are reset and widened if undersized, and expansion joints are cut and sealed. These details are where most surface repairs fail if they are ignored.

The traditional mud (kacha) layer on Pakistani roofs provides some insulation and slope, but it is heavy, absorbs water like a sponge and slowly compacts into low spots. When it is soaked, it keeps the slab wet for weeks and adds enormous weight. Two zones on almost every Pakistani roof suffer more than the rest. The area around the overhead water tank is constantly wet from overflow and condensation, and carries heavy point loads from the tank stand; screed here cracks and crumbles quickly. The area in front of the staircase room (mumty) door sees the most foot traffic and often has a threshold set level with the roof, so water runs under the door.
